Youth of the Year
2010 Youth of the Year Qur’an Clanton a 17 year old senior at “I think, therefore I am.” When one looks at what Qur’an has lived through, one might expect to find an angry, defiant, violent young man lashing back at a world that has not treated him kindly. Instead, we find a young, determined individual who tutors kids for free, mentors kids through the Big Brother program, has a kind heart and seeks to pursue a useful, productive life. He has a serene demeanor that covers the scars of all he has lived through. He is an impressive and inspiring young man Qur’an has a strong set of values. He is honest and fair in his dealings with others. He is not afraid of hard work and welcomes a challenge. Because of the many challenges he has had to face in his life, he is stronger than most kids his age. Qur’an persists with the saying “Don’t let your happenings, destroy your happiness.” When asked how he manages stress Qur’an replied that football was a good outlet, as was music. Qur’an sets high goals for himself, academically, athletically, and for what he can give to others. He is not the typical teenager, focused on self. Rather, he embodies the quiet dignity of a true leader. When asked how he continues to make good choices, despite all the traumatic life experiences he has lived through, he simply replied that he had seen consequences of poor choices. He wants to do so much more with his life. Qur’an has learned from other’s mistakes. Many adults are incapable of this feat!
Qur’an wants to attend Qur’an will represent the Boys & Girls Club of Alton on March 26-27 in -------------------------------------------------------------------

Smart Moves On February 23, 2010 at our Lewis & Clark Site, Officer Trent from the Madison County Police Department visited with the participants of our Smart Moves Program. Officer Trent talked with the kids about being drug and alcohol free. Officer Trent even did a demonstration with the hand cuffs to see if the member could get out of them. This member tried to get out; however, he failed at his attempt. The program members told the police officer that they never wanted to be hand cuffed again, and that they did not like that feeling. I like this Smart Moves Program and it was really effective. The kids had a ball and learned a lot. There were 16 club participants involved in this program with Officer Trent. ------------------------------------------------------------------ ![]() Aaron Walker, Qur'an Clanton, Demesha Cunningham
The Boys & Girls Club of Alton has identified and named three of our Teen REACH participants: Demesha Cunningham, Aaron A.J. Walker and Qur'an Clanton all are seniors at Alton High School to serve as our "Outreach Specialists." The duties of these teens are to promote our teen center, plan special events for the teens and also be a mentor to our younger club members. These teens are required to volunteer at least four hours a week in the Club. These teens have done an awesome job. They are the face of our TEEN CENTER.
Their most recent event was a Teen Social that was held on Thursday February 27th with more than 100 teens in attendance.
------------------------------------------------------------------ Cavity Free Zone- Healthy Teeth Cavity Free Zone is facilitated by two of Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville Dental School Students. The kids really enjoy seeing them. On the first day, these dental students made it very interesting and inviting for our kids. The dental students brought in a puppet with really big teeth to show the kids the proper way to brush. The kids really enjoyed the puppet. Cavity Free Zone is facilitated by two of Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville Dental Students. Ms. Courtney, the Dental Student had an exciting hands-on project for the kids. She put vinegar in one cup with an egg and mouth wash in another to demonstrate to the kids how important it is to use mouth wash. The other demonstration was when the kids had to put on latex gloves and Ms. Courtney put peanut butter in the palm of their hands and made them squeeze. Peanut Butter oozed all between their fingers and this demo was showing how food can easily get between teeth and stay there, that's why it is important to brush your teeth 3 times daily. The kids were really intrigued with the demonstrations. They really enjoy Cavity Free Zone. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Service Learning: Relief Efforts The club organized donations for relief for Haiti. We spread the word through Face book, and had pamphlets distributed at the club. Schnucks donated a monetary gift. The parents of our members, who work at the St. Louis Children's Hospital donated first aid kits. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Smart Girls We have two different sessions of Smart Girls running, one at our Lewis & Clark Site which is facilitated by Ms. Briana and Ms. Stephanie (Volunteer) at this point, she has 15 girls who are excited about the program and what's being taught. The other Smart Girls program takes place here at our CCH site. These ladies are so excited they have recruited one of our newest members the very first day she attended, telling them all the things that Ms. Neha, the facilitator has in store for them. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Local Fine Arts Competition
The exhibition for the National Fine Arts Program was on the 27th of December, 2009 at the Jacoby's Art Center in Alton. There was a ribbon cutting ceremony at 12:30 p.m.; Sara Woodman (Chairman of the BGCA Board) acted as our VIP Guest. We had a panel of three judges: Cass Funkhouser (an enthusiastic club supporter), Dr. Sangsook Park (Art Professor at SIUE) and Sara Woodman. A total of twenty members had their art pieces displayed under different categories (oil/acrylic, watercolor, pastel, sculpture, collage and printmaking).
The kids were very excited about their work being acknowledged by the judges and their family members alike. The parents were very enthusiastic about the exhibition as well. They clicked a lot of photographs of their kids with their respective art pieces. In the meantime, the judges were required to critique the art work and pick the winners from each category. At 1:15 p.m., everyone gathered at the stage, the judges and our VIP Guest was given "Certificates of Appreciation" for taking time out of their busy schedule to encourage our budding artists. After that, the members were handed participation certificates and Regional certificates to the winners by Al Womack, Jr. (Executive Director of Boys & Girls Club of Alton). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
